Arthritis Massage Therapy & Joint Pain Relief

Arthritis pain and stiffness can make everyday activities more difficult and may affect:
  • walking
  • sleep
  • exercise
  • work
  • mobility
  • grip strength
  • household tasks
  • overall comfort

Many people with arthritis also experience muscle tension and compensation patterns in the:
  • neck
  • shoulders
  • back
  • hips
  • knees
  • hands
  • feet
At Oasis Massage, we use gentle, customized massage techniques to help reduce muscle tension, improve comfort, and support mobility for clients living with arthritis.

What Is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a broad term used to describe inflammation, stiffness, or degeneration affecting the joints.
Common symptoms may include:
  • joint pain
  • stiffness
  • swelling
  • reduced mobility
  • aching muscles
  • decreased flexibility
  • tenderness around joints

Symptoms may vary from mild discomfort to chronic pain that affects daily activities.

Common Types of Arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and involves gradual wear and tear of the joints over time.
Commonly affected areas include:
  • knees
  • hips
  • hands
  • spine
  • shoulders
Symptoms often include:
  • stiffness after inactivity
  • aching pain
  • reduced joint mobility
  • discomfort with movement

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation in the joints.
Symptoms may include:
  • joint swelling
  • warmth or tenderness
  • fatigue
  • stiffness, especially in the morning
  • flare-ups that vary over time
Massage therapy is not a treatment for autoimmune disease, but gentle massage may help reduce surrounding muscle tension and support relaxation during stable periods.

Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory arthritis associated with psoriasis. Symptoms may include:
  • joint pain and stiffness
  • swelling in fingers or toes
  • fatigue
  • tendon discomfort

Arthritis and Chronic Muscle Tension
When joints become painful or stiff, surrounding muscles often tighten to protect the area. Over time, this compensation may contribute to:
  • muscle fatigue
  • postural imbalance
  • restricted movement
  • tension patterns in other areas of the body

Many clients notice that stress and inactivity can also increase stiffness and discomfort.

How Massage May Help Arthritis
Massage therapy may help:
  • reduce muscle tension
  • improve circulation
  • support relaxation
  • decrease stress
  • improve flexibility
  • reduce feelings of stiffness
  • support mobility and comfort

Treatment is always adjusted to your comfort level and current symptoms.

Sessions may include work on the:
  • neck
  • shoulders
  • back
  • hips
  • hands
  • knees
  • feet
  • surrounding muscles supporting affected joints

During active inflammatory flare-ups, lighter pressure and gentler techniques are often recommended.

The Mobility and Posture Connection
When joints lose mobility, the body often adapts by changing movement patterns and posture.
Over time, this may place extra strain on surrounding muscles and joints. Tight muscles and compensation patterns can increase discomfort and reduce flexibility.

Improving mobility, movement awareness, and muscle balance may help support long-term comfort and function.

In cases where arthritis affects movement patterns or mobility, a postural analysis may be used to better understand how the body is compensating and where additional support may be helpful. (Learn more about Postural Analysis.)

Why Choose Oasis Massage
Our therapists look at the whole body, not just the painful joint.
We assess:
  • muscle tension patterns
  • mobility restrictions
  • posture
  • stress-related tension
  • compensation patterns
  • comfort level and sensitivity

This helps us create a more personalized treatment plan based on your goals and symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Can massage cure arthritis?
Massage does not cure arthritis or reverse joint degeneration. However, many clients experience less muscle tension, improved relaxation, and greater comfort with regular treatment.

  • Is massage safe for arthritis?
In many cases, yes. Treatment is adjusted based on your symptoms, comfort level, inflammation, and sensitivity. Gentle techniques may be used during flare-ups.

  • Will deep tissue massage help arthritis?
Not always. Some clients benefit from moderate pressure, while others respond better to lighter work. Sessions are customized to your body’s needs.

  • Can massage help stiffness?
Many clients report feeling looser and more mobile after treatment, especially when muscle tension contributes to stiffness patterns.

What to Book
Book a free 15-minute New Client Intake & Consultation and pair it with one of the following services based on your symptoms, mobility, and comfort level:
  • 30-minute Target Area Massage (1–2 areas)
  • 60-minute Target Area Massage (2–3 areas)
  • Assisted Stretching (Upper or Lower focus)

For mild to moderate arthritis symptoms affecting one or two primary areas such as a knee, shoulder, or hand, the 30-minute Target Area Massage is often a good starting point. This allows focused work on the joint and surrounding muscle tension.

If you experience widespread stiffness, chronic pain, postural compensation, or multiple affected areas, the 60-minute Target Area Massage usually allows enough time to address broader tension patterns throughout the body.

Clients experiencing reduced flexibility, stiffness, or mobility limitations may also benefit from Assisted Stretching, which supports joint movement and helps reduce muscular restriction over time.

We do not want to waste your time or your money. Your therapist will help determine the most appropriate approach during your consultation based on your symptoms, mobility, and comfort level.

If arthritis pain or stiffness is affecting your daily life, Oasis Massage can help support your comfort, mobility, and overall function.
