Monkey Pox & Upcoming Changes

Monkey Pox
We are following this virus as new information presents itself. Symptoms overlap with those of Covid, flu and other known viruses, with the addition of skin blisters. At this time, we can honestly say that our existing cleaning protocols and screening should protect staff and clients from exposure. As always, we ask that clients call to reschedule if they are feeling unwell or if they have an unidentified rash. For known skin conditions, such as psoriasis or eczema, we can safely provide massage while avoiding the affected area.

Summary of changes
  • Effective Aug 20th, we are no longer able to process gratuities through our software. Moving forward, clients may only tip using cash. We apologize for any inconvenience.
  • As of Oct 1st, the discounts for series and new monthly memberships will change slightly to make them more sustainable.
  • On Jan 1st, we have a planned price increase.
  • As of June 1st, we have a planned price increase. We will also discontinue accepting gratuities at this time.

Why?
When processing credit card transactions, our software does a pre-authorization to see if there are funds available. This does not do a balance check, meaning that we have no way of knowing if the funds available will cover the entire transaction until the transaction settles at the end of the day. Sometimes, when we reach out about these issues, clients are willing to provide alternate payment method to pay the difference; sometimes they are not. The business has unfortunately had to absorb losses from credit card transactions not processing for the full balance. We can correct this problem by deactivating the pre-authorization. The downside of this is that credit card tips must be disabled.

Oasis Massage is primarily a pain management massage practice, not a spa. This makes it a logical extension to eliminate tipping altogether, as tipping in a clinical setting is less ethical. Pallas personally disagrees with tipping culture as a whole and would rather pay her staff a livable wage, not have them depend on clients to pay more than the advertised rates.

How do we determine the price increase?
We are currently researching the current rates offered at other local massage practices to see how we compare. To remain competitive, we don’t want to be the most expensive but we do need to be able to meet the increasing overhead expenses. After doing an analysis of at least 10 local massage practices, we will determine how much our rates need to increase. By eliminating tipping, we may need to increase even further. The average client tips 15-20%, so the price increase will likely be in this range.

When?
The rate increase will be done in two phases, spaced six months apart. The goal is to have two smaller price increases instead of one bigger one.

Differentiating Services

written by Pallas Hutchison

This week, we updated how we organize our services in our booking software. This has already spurred a lot of discussion among the staff as well as clients. Yes, I just created hours of work for myself to update the backend of our software. Yes, I expect some confusion and maybe even some pushback.
This will take some time to get used to. New clients will probably find it easier to adjust than existing clients.

Why did we bother doing this?
  1. To better meet client expectations: We will begin more clearly defining what service we are providing. Client education and staff consistency will be necessary for this to work. Here is an example: A new client books online for a deep tissue massage. During their intake, the client says that they just want to relax, that they like firm pressure, and they want a full body massage. What they are describing is a Swedish massage with firm pressure.

Many clients confuse deep tissue massage with firm pressure. They are not interchangeable terms. Firm pressure can be used with many massage techniques. Deep Tissue massage can also use a light to medium pressure. (I've written an entire blog dedicated to just this concept. If you're interested, you can read it here: What is Deep Tissue Massage?)

  2. To allow our staff to specialize: Every massage therapist has a different approach to massage and a skillset that varies depending on the continuing education they have completed. Some massage therapists resonate with the spa-relaxation type services. Some do really well working with whiplash recovery. As the business grows, we want our staff to work with the types of clients that they do best with. This means better results for clients and more job satisfaction for our staff.

  3. To collect more accurate data on the types of services our clients want: This will allow us to do targeted hiring and bring on someone who meets the needs of more clients. For example, if the majority clients book under "for Pain Management", we will know that we need to bring on more staff with those skills. Alternately, if the majority of our clients are booking "for Athletes", we will need to bring on more staff with those skills.

Changes to Our Online Booking

Changes to Our Online Booking
Our website is set up with services organized by client goal: for Relaxation, for Athletes, for Pain Management. We have received a lot of positive feedback about our website’s goal-focused organizational system. It allows clients to find information on the services that they want more easily.

Unfortunately, when we first set up our online booking software, we organized it by category. As we have expanded our knowledge and service types, a lot of different types of massage and manual therapies got lumped together under the “Massage” category. Client feedback indicates that this large grouping provides too many choices and client aren’t sure which service is the best option for them. We don’t expect clients to know which modality falls into massage and which falls into manual therapy. As we add more fitness related services, things begin to overlap and the category system makes even less sense.

To make it more consistent and user friendly, we will begin transitioning the online booking to match our website. This will create some temporary confusion as we update everything but we feel that it will ultimately be more intuitive for our clients to find the services that meet their needs more quickly.

Human errors happen. If you have any difficulty, please let us know so we can fix any mistakes. Thank you for your patience while we work on this.
